The film takes place in present-day Los Angeles, where we meet Sebastian Wilder (played by Ryan Gosling), a jazz pianist who works as a session musician while trying to make a name for himself as a jazz artist. One night, while playing at a restaurant, he meets Mia Dolan (played by Emma Stone), an aspiring actress who works as a barista.
