The film takes place four years after the events of the second installment. Dr. Alan Grant (Sam Neill) is tricked into joining a wealthy couple, Paul and Amanda Kirby (William H. Macy and Tea Leoni), on a private expedition to Isla Sorna, the second island where the original park was built. Their mission is to find their missing son, Eric (Alessandro Nivola), who has been stranded on the island.
