In 1999, Ken Carter, a young and ambitious high school teacher, took on the role of head coach of the Richmond High School varsity basketball team in Richmond, California. At the time, the team had a reputation for being talented but undisciplined, with many players struggling in the classroom. Carter, a former college basketball player himself, was determined to change the team's culture and emphasize the importance of education. He implemented a strict policy: if his players did not maintain a passing grade point average (GPA), they would be benched.
