Based on the character of Max Rockatansky, a police officer in a dystopian Australia, Mad Max was born out of a script written by George Miller and Dan O'Bannon, with a budget of just $350,000. The film's low budget proved to be a blessing in disguise, as it forced Miller to get creative with practical effects, stunts, and action sequences that still hold up today.
