The film begins in Pondicherry, India, where Pi grows up in a zoo owned by his father. The story takes a dramatic turn when Pi's family decides to move to Canada, and they set sail on a ship with some of their zoo animals. However, their journey is disrupted by a storm, and Pi finds himself stranded on a lifeboat with a Bengal tiger, a zebra, a hyena, and an orangutan.
